This homeowner had just picked up a 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge and found a mobile connector online at a good price, so they wanted a NEMA 14-50 outlet to plug it into rather than a hardwired charger. Smart, cost-effective way to get set up at home. The garage already had a 100-amp sub-panel, so there was plenty of capacity to work with.

We ran about 20 feet of EMT conduit from the sub-panel across the brick wall to the new outlet location, all hand-bent on site. EMT was the right fit for this exposed run along the masonry, and clean conduit work is something I take pride in. I spent five years in commercial electrical, where everything goes in EMT, so the bending is second nature.

The circuit is 50 amps on 6-gauge wire, sized properly for a NEMA 14-50. One nice side benefit: if this homeowner ever decides to swap the outlet for a hardwired 48-amp charger down the road, the wiring is already there to support it. Done in a single visit.
