Do You Need a Panel Upgrade for an EV Charger?

March 2026

This is one of the most common questions we get during estimates — and the honest answer is: most of the time, no. But it depends on your home. Here's how to think about it.

What Does a Level 2 Charger Actually Require?

A Level 2 EV charger needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit, typically a 50-amp breaker for a Tesla Wall Connector or similar hardwired charger. That means your panel needs to have an available slot and enough remaining capacity to support it without overloading the system.

When You Probably Don't Need an Upgrade

Most homes built after 1980 have 200-amp panels. If yours does and you have an open slot, you almost certainly don't need an upgrade. We add a dedicated 50-amp breaker, run the circuit to your garage, and install the charger. Start to finish, one day.

Even some older homes with 150-amp or 100-amp panels can support an EV charger — it depends on what else is pulling from that panel. We do a load calculation on every estimate to check exactly how much capacity you have available.

When You Might Need an Upgrade

If your panel is at or near capacity — all breaker slots full, high baseline electrical load from electric heat, hot tubs, multiple AC units — there may not be room to safely add a 50-amp circuit without upgrading. Older homes in Central PA, particularly those built before 1960 with original panels, are more likely to fall into this category.

A full panel upgrade in Central PA typically runs $2,200 and up, depending on the scope. It's a bigger job but it also future-proofs your home — for the charger, for any additional electrical work down the road, and for resale value.

What About a Sub-Panel?

If you need a charger in a detached garage but your main panel doesn't have enough available capacity to run a long circuit, a sub-panel at the garage is sometimes the right answer. It keeps your main panel intact and gives the garage its own electrical capacity. We see this frequently on larger rural properties in Centre County and Clearfield County.

How We Figure This Out

We assess this on every free estimate. Todd comes out, looks at your panel, does a quick load calculation, and tells you exactly what you need before any money changes hands. There's no pressure and no upselling — if your panel is fine, we'll tell you that and install the charger. If it needs work, we'll explain why and give you the full cost upfront.
