A homeowner in Hawk Run picked up a Tesla Model Y and wanted to charge at home with the Tesla Mobile Connector — which meant a properly installed NEMA 14-50 outlet in the detached garage where the car parks. It’s a great setup for the money: a 50-amp outlet, the connector Tesla ships, and a full overnight charge every night.
The catch was getting power out there. The garage sits across the yard from the house, and there was no circuit in the building fit for EV charging — so the job needed a trench across the lawn for a new underground feeder. Credit where it’s due here: the homeowner and a few of his buddies from the gym grabbed shovels and dug that trench themselves before I got there. That's real work, and it saved them money on the install.
With the trench open, I ran the conduit, pulled a new feeder from the house out to the garage, and brought it up the exterior wall and inside — finishing in clean surface conduit across the wall to a commercial-grade NEMA 14-50 outlet on its own dedicated 50-amp circuit. I pulled it in 6-gauge copper on purpose: that leaves headroom to step up to a hardwired 48-amp Level 2 charger down the road without re-running a single foot of wire. Conduit sealed, connections landed and tested, the Model Y plugged in and charging the same day — and because it’s a standard 14-50, it’ll serve any future EV or plug-in the household ever brings home.
